so, scotty mccreery wins american idol. what's there left to be said...? i just have the eyes for reality tv. i'm often right at predicting the winners.
so why scotty? he's not the most talented, he's not the best singer, he doesn't sing familiar songs, he doesn't have all the drama in his performance, he can't even reach the high notes... so why did scotty mccreery win?
well, let me see... he has all the things that previous idol winners have. he's real, he's religious, the fact that he's young and has a big voice is already a plus point, he's consistent in delivering each week, he's commercial.
one fact that everyone should have digested already, after 10 seasons, if you have been watching the show for years, you should have known, that the final showdown in the final 2 can no longer influence people's votes. how well one outperforms the other in the finale have no effects in the voting outcome anymore, not since Taylor Hicks in season 5.
the time that matters, is the period from the Final 5, to the Final 3. if a contestant manage to nail his/her singing in this period, then they have actually secure themselves for the finale.
and looking at the showdown this year, lauren, if you really watched, still did not outperformed scotty, nor did scotty outperformed lauren. but since scotty has clearly marked his spot since the final 5, singing ballads each week, showing his country ballad side, it is hard for lauren to shake that image from america.
back in the early years, if you still remember, Katherine McPhee outperfomed Taylor Hicks but she didn't win, David Archuleta outperformed David Cook but he didn't win, Adam Lambert outperformed Kris Allen but the former didn't win, Crystal Bowersox outperformed Lee DeWyze but she lost.
but if you see the pattern, the winner won't be as successful as the runner-up, usually, since David Cook. so i guess Lauren will be just fine.
to compare scotty and lauren, one thing that scotty has is the killer instinct, in which i can't see in lauren since the beginning, even down to the finale. she still leaves holes in her performances showing that she needs more practice and experience. well for scotty, he never had that problem, he was always confident on stage and always does what he knows best for him - country. he did say in the beginning of the season that he will not change what he is, and that he will only shake things up once he gets further in the competition. so that's what he did, and that's what america agreed to.
scotty has the best male country voice we've had in american idol. the last country male singer was, if i'm not mistaken, bucky covington, back in what year i can't remember. at that time, he looks dumb being on the show. no sense of connection with audience, nor with the show.
i think, everyone should just stop thinking that the winner of american idol should be the one with the best voice. that's when everyone gets heart-broken. it's reality tv, so stick to reality, don't be in your fantasy.
so if you're saying that "scotty does not possess the idol type character, but so do previous idol winners," then you should think again. maybe it's you that don't possess the idol type of thinking.
if he has the qualities that what previous winners have, than he should be one too.
gosh, i could write a whole thesis on reality tv. hahaha.
critical thinking is overrated, it's time to master the reality tv thinking.
